Guernsey Becomes Member of Berne Convention

15/03/2015

The World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) has accepted Guernsey as a member of the Berne Convention.  This convention provides protection of literary and artistic works and is the most widely recognised copyright convention in the world covering 168 countries.  The convention will be extended to Guernsey from 21 November 2014.

Guernsey has a great deal to offer with regards to structuring and protecting intellectual property including introducing the world’s first Image Rights Register in 2012.  Being a member of the Berne Convention offers an agreed international standard of copyright protection across all the member countries without the need of registration.

As well as the obvious benefits with regards to protection and global business that being a member entails Guernsey is also welcoming this event as another sign that the small Isle is more than capable of meeting international standards which can only improve on its reputation within the international community.
